“We
had
prepared hard for the bid process. We held
extensive brainstorming sessions and went over
all possible loopholes. We held a full dress
rehearsal a day before presentation and had
worked around all eventualities. It paid off as
we were praised for our professional approach to
the bid,” said Qatar Athletics Federation
President H.E. Dahlan Al Hamad, who presided the
Qatar delegation to Monaco where the IAAF
decision was made.
The Qatari delegation made a 20-minute slideshow presentation to the 26-member IAAF council. This was followed by a few questions from the IAAF council members. The first voting was tied at 12-12, with two council members abstaining from voting. However, the second time around, the result was clear as Qatar won the competition hands down with a 15-11 result.
By this election, Qatar has won the rights to hold the biggest indoor athletics event in the world. It has once again displayed its serious intention about becoming the new sporting capital of the world. Doha, which hosted the Asian Games in 2006, annually hosts the IAAF Super Grand Prix athletics meet and is bidding for the 2016 Olympic Games.
Mr. Khalid Al Meer, QAAF vice-president and also the secretary-general of the bid committee commented: “We left nothing to chance. Our presentation was so thorough that we faced only a few general questions, which we easily answered. This will be a big boost to athletics in the region. I am confident about a perfect organization of the Championships in 2010,”. On his part, Mr. Abdulla Al Zaini, General Secretary of the QAAF said: “I have worked with the bid committee from the very beginning and I knew that we had a good chance to win the bid”.
However,
Turkey
was the only rival of Qatar who wanted to host
this international championship but IAAF
selected Qatar to host it.
"These were clearly two top class candidates demonstrating not only excellent facilities and organizational capabilities but outstanding levels of support from public authorities," IAAF president Lamine Diack said in a statement.
It is worth notice that a committee from IAAF including Hanze George, President of European Association of Athletics Federations and Mr. Perwees, IAAF Secretary General, visited Doha on November 6, 2007 to view and examine the Qatari preparations to host the championship.
The meeting was attended also by the head and
