Blanka
Vlasic was born in the city of Split in Croatia
on 8/11/1983. With the start of 2002, she
crossed the high jump result of 1.96m. Last
year, it was turn of two very elegant women to
scale the performance heights, literally in the
case of Croat Blanka Vlasic, who put on a high
jump show that enthralled the crowd, and pointed
the way directly towards her World title winning
performance in Osaka three months later.
The daughter of Decathlete star who still holds the Croatian record in that event, Blanca weights 75kg and her height is 1.93m. Early on in her life, she wanted to be a sprinter. In Summer 2000, before she was seventeen, she was jumping 1.93m, and was able to enter the Olympics in Sydney that year. Then it was the World Junior Championships in Chile's Santiago, where many touted her as a possible winner. She beat Marina Kuptsova who held the title, with a 1.91m jump, so won the Gold Medal. Before she was 18, she finished sixth at the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada, with a jump of 1.95 Meters, being 1cm more than the leap that got her that place. So with her father and a other man, helping her train, she advanced to become very good when still only a teenager, something not uncommon for this sport. She won recently the 1 million prize along with other stars, achieving 18 out of 19 outdoor competitions.
In an interview by the website of Qatar Olympic Committee, she explained her attitudes and aspirations while participating in the Super Grand Prix in Doha to be held on Friday, 9th of May 2008. Firstly she was asked about her feeling in this event. She answered that she came to compete along with other international athletes and she feels happy for that.
Blanca
stressed that she feels confident to pass the 2
m range this time in Doha. " I feel happy and
believe will do perfect during events on Friday,
because I have trained well and prepared myself
for this internationals sporting event.", added
Blanca speaking in the interview.
In her response to a question on her ambitions and aspirations towards future challenges, Blanca replied: " I believe the Beijing Olympic Games represent my sole coming challenge and I aspire to seize the gold medal there in August 2008"
She also commented on her tears
during the Osaka 2008 championships and said
that such decisive moments were of great
importance to me and this is why I could not
help crying." It is worth notice that she won
her last Junior World Championships, in
Kingston, Jamaica, with a 9cm lead over her
rivals, which gave her the trophy with a 1.96
meter jump. As the favorite this was still a
notable achievement then. She finished in an
equal fifth place in the European Championships,
in her last junior phase. Then five weeks later
reached 1.99
Meters
in France, in her first Golden League Victory.
She was very happy to have beaten competitors
who she had a lot of respect for. Then not much
later she jump over 2 meters, which was a very
emotional moment for her. Entering the 2 meter
club, which sent allot of people around the
stadium happy too. Still in 2003, she won the
European Under-23 prize in Bydgoszcz, Poland, by
jumping 1.98m. She reached 2.01 Meters in Zurich
a bit later. Then in 2006 she boomed. With her
winning a Silver Medal in Moscow, in 2006's
Indoor World Championships. Just a while after
she became among the favorites for winning the
event, with a jump of 2.05 Meters in Banská
Bystrica, 3 cm behind the world record, and
reached a more stable many jumps over 2 meters
ability, while surgery on a hyperthyroid harmed
her career, in 2005, where she did only 2
events. This rest, helped her, with her getting
1.95 meters in one of those.
The interview concluded with a question on her opinion on Doha preparations, and she replied that she finds the preparations of high quality and excellence. She finally thanked the interviewers. Below are some of Blanca's results:
