Qatar’s
cross-country team managed to occupy the 5th
rank in the finals of the IAAF World Cross
Country Championship, which was held in
Amman-Jordan on 28 March 2009. The Qatari team
could collect (79) points, as the total points
gained by the best (4) athletes among the (6)
champions who represented Qatar. The results of
these athletes were:
1) Saif Saeed Shaheen, (rank 13)
2) Ahmad Hassan Abdullah, (rank 18)
3) Felix Kipuri, (rank 20)
4) Jamal Bilal Salem, (rank, 28)

Kenya dominated the 1st rank with a total of
(28) points, while Ethiopia occupied the 2nd
rank with the same number of points (28). This
represented a state of tie to seize the first
rank. In accordance with the rules and
regulations of IAAF, the break of the tie is
determined by the final rank of the fourth
competitor in each team. Kenya’s forth athlete
occupied the 11th rank while the fourth
Ethiopian athlete occupied the 12th rank, and
thus Kenya’s team won the first rank and
Ethiopia was ranked second.
Eritrea ended in the 3rd rank where it collected
50 points, while Uganda occupied the 4th rank
(65 points), leaving the 5th rank to Qatar with
79 points. Thus, Africa dominated the first four
ranks in the championship, where 19 countries
participated. The final ranking order of the
participating countries ended as below:
(Kenya - Ethiopia - Eritrea - Uganda - Qatar -
Morocco - Spain - USA - South Africa - Rwanda -
Japan - Denmark - France - Britain - Jordan -
Botswana - Canada - Egypt - Iraq). The number
of participants who represented these countries
reached (145) athletes, among whom (8) athletes
did not complete the race.
