Dahlan Jumaan Al Hamad of Qatar has been elected
Vice President of International Association of
Athletics Federations (IAAF) in the 46th IAAF
Congress meeting Wednesday morning with the
first phase of elections held in Osaka, Japan.
Al Hamad, President of Qatar Association of Athletic Federation (QAAF) and Senior Vice President of Asian Athletics Association (AAA) was one of the four successful candidates voted into office by the IAAF Congress.
Dahlan Al Hamad was chosen together with the former double-Olympic 1500 metres champion, Lord Sebastian Coe (Great Britain), Sergey Bubka (Ukraine) and Robert Hersh (USA).
The members will serve a four-year term.
Bubka received the largest number of votes with 167, ahead of Hersh (141), Coe (137) and Al-Hamad (129).
Both Ilkka Kanerva from Finland and Cuba's Alberto Juantorena withdrew from the election.
With President Lamine Diack (SEN) and Honorary Treasurer Jean Poczobut (FRA) standing unopposed for their positions, the main focus of Wednesday morning were the votes for the four positions as IAAF Vice President, and the composition of the rest of the IAAF Council.
